TWO uncapped players have been named in the Scotland match day squad for Sunday’s Autumn Test match against Wales at Scotstoun.

Outside back Evie Tonkin (who has come through the Scottish Qualified Programme) and stand-off Sarah Denholm (who started her rugby journey with Biggar and has come through the Scottish Futures Programme) will be on the bench for the first of the two Test matches being held at Scotstoun.

Rachel Malcolm, who has been appointed captain for the season, will start at blindside flanker, and Helen Nelson, who is vice-captain, starts at inside centre. Former captain Lisa Martin, who was drafted into the squad yesterday in place of the injured Hannah Smith, is at stand-off for what will be her 50th cap.

“I’ve been very, very impressed by Rachel’s leadership,” head coach Philip Doyle said after announcing the 23 for his first home game in charge of the team. “We’re working well together, and she understands the way I want to play the game.

“I am really looking forward to the Sunday and experiencing my first home match at Scotstoun,” Doyle continued. “We have a few injuries right now which has seen changes to our recent starting line-up, but we are delighted to still have such an experienced squad that we can select from and I know that all girls selected will put on a fantastic performance against Wales.

“We know that this is going to be a tough match against Wales. They are well drilled following their recent two Autumn Test matches against Spain and Ireland, and are exactly the sort of opposition we want to play as we look ahead to the World Cup qualifiers next year. They’re such a good threat physically up front, they’re skilful, they’ve got a great set piece – these are the type of teams we really want to play.”
