IN treacherous conditions at Millbrae, Matt Davidson was rock-solid at 15 and kicked superbly for Ayrshire Bulls in their hard-fought win over Southern Knights.
It wasn’t a day for open, running rugby at Goldenacre on Saturday, but both teams made a game of it, and Tom Roche‘s sharp finish was a highlight, edging the former Leinster academy player onto the left wing ahead of Jordan Edmunds of Boroughmuir Bears. Not much happening for the right wings this week, but Tom Brown was tidy for the Bears with what little of the game came his way.
Nyle Godsmark worked hard (largely in vain) trying to spark things at outside centre for Southern Knights, so is selected just ahead of the tidy Archie Russell of Stirling County. Russell’s midfield partner Grant Hughes is very unfortunate to miss out, but Robbie McCallum was a constant threat with ball in hand, scoring one very good try and creating another, whilst also being abrasive in defence and a real competitor over the tackled man, so he is at inside-centre instead.

Bruce Houston impressed at stand-off for Heriot’s until his clang late in the match which allowed Stirling County in for Hughes’ late winner, so Martin Cimprich – with a rare start for the Bears in place of Tom Pittman – gets the nod thanks to an immaculate goal-kicking performance and a heroic 50-yard run-in for his team’s second try.
Up front, George Thornton had a massive match in both the scrum and around the park for Ayrshire Bulls on Friday night so he is at loose-head, his team-mate Alex McGuire was abrasive in attack and defence at hooker, and Martin McGinley is at tight-head after 76 hard minutes at the pit-face for the Bears.
Fraser Hastie had another big game in the engine-room for Heriot’s and his opposite number on Saturday, youngster Max Williamson, was a stand-out for Stirling County.
Craig Keddie has been a warhorse for Boroughmuir for several seasons, and his leadership has been key to the Bears keeping the faith during a tough season, so he at blindside. Youngster Rhys Tait was outstanding at open side flanker for Bears on Sunday. And two-try hero Blair MacPherson led from the front in a man-of-the-match performance for the Bulls against the Knights.
