SIGNING his first senior contract with Edinburgh is only the second most exciting thing that has happened to Nathan Sweeney this week because he has now been bestowed with the great honour of being selected in The Offside Line’s Super Series Team-of-the-Week after a lively, try-scoring performance for the capital outfit’s back-up squad against Watsonians on Friday night. They say that good things come in threes so the 22-year-old should really think about putting a bet on the Scottish Grand National this coming Saturday.
He is joined in the back-three by his Edinburgh A team-mate Finn Douglas, retaining the No 14 jersey from last week, while Ayrshire Bulls’ two-try hero Luca Bardelli is on the opposite wing.
The classy Matt Davidson of Heriot’s gets the nod ahead of Ben Salmon – a threat in the wide channels for Glasgow Warriors A – at outside-centre; while Scott Robeson of Boroughmuir Bears edges out Edinburgh A’s Cammy Hutchison and the hard-working Grant Hughes of Heriot’s at inside-centre.

I personally think that Nathan Sweeney is definitely not the best fullback and was only chosen because he was on the winning side. Personally, Watsonians was blown out of the game and the linesman didn’t contribute much in the game. There are much better fullbacks in the league and unfortunately players that have great games are not chosen, even when you are on the losing side. I personally think that Dom Coetzer is the best fullback currently and he should be looked at higher honours. he was much more involved in the game than Sweeney and did many things better than Sweeney. With all respect Sweeney didn’t even feature at all last year in both the competitions, while Dom Coetzer was in the last 5 teams as well as the FOSROC final team. The question remains, is Sweeney really that good.
