SRU Council and Board Member Adam Gray died on Wednesday evening due to complications following heart-surgery. He was 60-years-old.

A dairy farmer by profession from the hamlet of Borgue, near Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway, Gray was a stalwart of Stewartry rugby club in Castle Douglas as a player, captain and coach.

He also coached Glasgow at U18 level in 2003, Glasgow at U19 in 2004 and travelled with the Scotland U17 squad to their training camp in Valladolid as an assistant coach in 2007 and 2008.

He was appointed to Scottish Rugby’s staff in 2006 and served for four years as Performance Development Manager for Glasgow South. Between 2011 and 2013 he was on Scottish Rugby’s referee selection panel and in 2014 he was appointed to the referees’ advisory panel.

The following year, he was first elected to the Scottish Rugby Council as a representative of regional league clubs in Glasgow South, and in 2018 he was appointed to the Board of Scottish Rugby. Earlier this month, Gray was named on SRU President Dee Bradbury’s task force which is to look into the thorny issue of reforming the Murrayfield governance structure.

He is survived by wife Lissy, and children Georgina and Cameron.

“On behalf of the Board of Scottish Rugby, I would like to express our profound shock and sadness over the passing of our colleague Adam Gray,” said SRU Chairman Colin Grassie. “Adam brought passion, wisdom and total integrity to everything he did over many years for Scottish Rugby. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and host of friends. We will miss him very much.”
