SCOTLAND Under-20s head coach Sean Lineen has named a 41-man extended Six Nations training squad to assemble for two camps this month at Oriam, ahead of the start of the rescheduled 2021 Six Nations which is due to start on Saturday 19th June, with the venues and fixtures still to be confirmed.

A previous camp in December did not involve 11 of the Scottish Rugby FOSROC Academy stage-three players listed today because of concerns at that time about breaking the two pro teams’ Covid-19 security bubbles.

There are six English-based players in the squad, including scrum-half Murray Redpath – younger brother of Cameron and son of Bryan – who is currently studying at Newcastle University.

With Christian Townsend – son of current Scotland head coach Gregor – also in the squad, there is a chance we will see a Redpath/Townsend half-back partnership in the dark blue jersey at some point during the campaign, 18 years on from the last time their fathers wore the No9 and No10 jerseys together against Italy at the conclusion of the 2003 Six Nations.

It has also been announced that Scotland 7s head coach Ciaran Beattie will replace Peter Murchie – who was recently appointed to the backroom team at Glasgow Warriors – as an assistant coach to the Under-20s squad.

“Although the players have been working hard on their own strength and conditioning, these camps will provide an important opportunity for us to work on rugby team skills with the players in an organised setting which will be valuable as they work towards the Six Nations Championship at the end of June,” said Lineen.

“It’s great to have the Contracted Academy players available to us for these camps, they will bring a wealth of knowledge to the playing group from the professional team environment. Two of those players Max Williamson and Alex Samuel were invited to train with the Scotland Men’s national team over the Guinness Six Nations, those players have experienced the next step up and the level of intensity that we will expect them to bring to these camps.”

  1. It would be interest6ing to see where these players actually started their rugby careers and would give some credit to the grass roots clubs who produced them but I suppose that is beyond the SRU?
