RORY SUTHERLAND has been added to the British & Irish Lions starting XV for this evening’s first Test against South Africa in Cape Town [kick-off 5pm BST].

He replaces Wyn Jones at loose-head prop. The Welshman has been ruled out of the match with a minor shoulder injury picked up in training on Thursday.

Mako Vunipola has been added the bench.

“It’s really bad luck for Wyn and we all feel for him missing out on tonight’s game,” said Lions head coach Warren Gatland.

“However, we’re confident he’ll be back in training next week and have no plans to bring in anyone else at this stage.”

  1. Great news for Rory Sutherland, hope he has a stormer and can last the full 80. Vunipola v Malherbe could be an issue if the match is tight.

    • Might have to eat my hat or something. Thought Vunipola put in a very steady shift when he came on. Didin’t really attack, just made sure his side stayed solid, good job.
Springboks will need to find something extra for the next game as it looked like the Lions simplified and stopped going too wide too quickly.
Great start, hoping for similar next week.

  2. Never seen the man put a foot wrong in a Scotland jersey. Looking forward to seeing him make some history today.
