PETER MURCHIE has confirmed the make-up of his back-room staff at Ayr ahead of the inaugural Super 6 season.

Local boy Pat MacArthur will continue to work under his former Glasgow Warriors and Scotland team-mate as forwards coach, while New Zealander Frazier Climo – now firmly established as an adopted son of Burns’ country – set to combine another season competing for the No 10 jersey with a role as a skills coach.

Alex Boyle joins the set-up as strength and conditioning coach, bringing 13 years of experience working with the likes of SportScotland, Tennis Scotland, the Scottish Women’s National Football Team and Scottish Rugby’s National Age-Grade set-up.

Heriot’s announce enhanced partnership with Edinburgh College

Former Ayr Under-18s and 2nd XV coach Gordon Kotze will manage the logistical side of things as ‘Head of Rugby Operations’, and another long-serving club stalwart in Douglas Stanley will manage the team. Graham Hollins will carry on in the team doctor role he fulfilled for the last 12 years, and Jessica Alexander will step up to head physio after four years assisting Helen Reid.

“An extensive recruitment process was carried out, whittling down over 90 applicants to a handful of successful candidates,” explained a statement from the club. “Those selected include a balance of familiar faces, along with some fresh blood.”

Meanwhile, Stirling County announced last week that Glasgow Warriors and Scotland centre Peter Horne, along with Eddie Pollock, will assist Ben Cairns with their Super 6 side; while their ‘Club XV’ will be headed up by Chris Faill, assisted by James Wade and Gary Holborn (as a player/coach).

Things are not quite so clear at Heriot’s, however, with it being announced earlier this week that head coach Ciaran Beattie has moved on to the Scotland 7s set-up.

  1. How does Climo being a Player/Coach count against the Player salary cap?
Is this a neat trick to allow him to be paid more than the £12k player limit?
