BOROUGHMUIR put in their best performance of the season to boost their chances of survival with a comprehensive 46-0 victory over Gala at the Queensferry Sports Hub on Saturday, in the only National League Division One match to go ahead.
Friday night’s Ayr versus Heriot’s Blues match was postponed as was Saturday’s Highland versus Stirling County clash in response to concerns over the Covid-19 situation.
Boroughmuir, fresh from a victory over Kelso seven days previously, adapted to their temporary ‘home’ quickly. Early on, Jack Hamilton chipped ahead, collected and passed to captain Mark Hare to go over for five points. From then on it was all about the Edinburgh side with Gala, fifth in the table, barely firing a shot.

Gav Welsh added try number two, converted by Calum Anderson, and Arran Wilson bagged try number three with Anderson’s penalty making it 20-0 at half-time against the shellshocked Borderers.
It was all one way traffic after the break, too, Callum McDevitt’s break setting up Hare for the bonus point try 46 seconds after the restart. Further scores came from George McLean, Anderson and Strath Mackenzie, with Anderson kicking six more points.
The result leaves Boroughmuir 11th in the table and still in the relegation zone, but they are now just eight points behind Ayr with a game in hand.
“That performance was first class,” said Boroughmuir head coach Richard Sievwright. “There was a lot that clicked, we applied pressure in the right areas of the pitch and defended well. We’ve had some tough results, but the players are always positive and performance driven.
“We’ll take some confidence from this and work hard to improve as a team by focusing on ourselves, just as we have done all season, going forward. There’s been some consistency in selection recently and the team as a whole have started to connect by knowing their roles.
“Derry McConnell has matured massively and has helped our line-out, captain Mark Hare is always influential, while George McLean is also a really consistent voice and knows rugby inside out, but, honestly, it’s been a collective effort of late.”
Two try skipper Hare added: “Gala were dominant at the start and we had to live off their mistakes, but we took our chances well and got momentum from that.”
Like the rest of rugby in Scotland, National One action has now been suspended by Scottish Rugby from this [Sunday] evening at 6pm until after March 29th due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) situation
