THE world famous Melrose Sevens will return after two years of Covid-induced hibernation with a four day event spanning Thursday 7th to Sunday 10th April 2022.

The news comes just a few days after plans for the ‘Maroon’[email protected]’ sports and music festival were announced by Gala RFC, which will take place at Netherdale on Saturday 20th August 2022, following a successful debut earlier this year.

The Melrose weekend will launch with a Sevens Hall of Fame Dinner on the Thursday evening, attracting guests from the rugby world to celebrate some extraordinary people who will be inducted into Melrose Sevens Hall of Fame.

Scotland’s final World Cup qualifying tournament

On Friday evening, there will be a match between the Southern Knights Super6 franchise and the British Army, which will feature a team of ex-internationalists and ex-Lions competing in an exhibition Sevens game at half time, all in support of the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

Then, on the Saturday [9th April], the traditional rugby sevens will feature 2o top-flight domestic and invitational sides competing for the 1883 Centenary Cup , last won by London Scottish in 2019.

The weekend will culminate on Sunday evening with a finale concert featuring Scottish bands, Bombskare and Big Country.

There will also be live evening entertainment on Friday and Saturday night, with tribute bands and DJs, at a cost of £20 per ticket.

“Being able to attract quality teams to Melrose really does enable us to put this event on the world rugby sevens stage, a weekend of fantastic rugby that will continue to celebrate the traditions we all hold dear,” said Phil Morris, Melrose Rugby Commercial and Sevens Tournament Director.

“We want our Sevens tournament to be fun, there’s going to be something for everyone, young and old. Melrose is where Rugby Sevens was invented in 1883 and we will we be back with a bang in 2022.”
