JONNY GRAY will play no further part in this year’s Six Nations campaign after suffering a hand injury during Saturday’s Calcutta Cup defeat to England.
There is no news of a replacement second-row being called into the squad at this stage. Scott Cummings, Ben Toolis, Grant Gilchrist and the uncapped Gloucester man Alex Craig have been involved with the set-up the last three weeks.
Sam Skinner was not named in Gregor Townsend’s original Six Nations training squad because he was still on the comeback trail from the hamstring injury which ruled him out of last year’s World Cup, but is now fully fit again and played the full 80 minutes at No8 for Exeter Chiefs against Harlequins last weekend.
Gray’s brother, Richie, has apparently made himself available again after missing the World Cup. He was not named in the initial Six Nations training squad because he was recovering from a head knock and was not involved in Toulouse’s last match against Bordeaux Begles on 26th January.
Lewis Carmichael of Edinburgh has also trained with the squad recently.
Gregor Townsend issues a statement in response to Finn Russell article
Surely a call up for Ritchie Gray must be on the cards. However we should be ok with a pairing of Gilchrist and Cummings against Italy.
