EDINBURGH head coach Richard Cockerill has delivered the biggest hint yet that John Barclay could be back in action in the next few weeks, by adding the Scotland captain – who has yet to play for the club after rupturing his achilles whilst playing for Scarlets at the tail-end of last season – to his European squad ahead of the team’s quarter-final clash at home to Munster in just over two weeks’ time.
Centre Mark Bennett – who missed several months with a ruptured hamstring but has made two appearances off the bench for the capital outfit during the last month – is also added to the squad.
Glasgow Warriors have bolstered their options by adding prop Zander Fagerson and flanker Callum Gibbins (who both dropped out of the initial squad through injury), as well as recent recruit centre/wing Kyle Steyn to their squad.
Hidalgo-Clyne joins Harlequins on loan
Meanwhile, former Edinburgh and Scotland full-back Sam Hidalgo-Clyne has gone on loan to Harlequins until the end of the season, and has been added to the English side’s Challenge Cup squad, having struggled to secure game time at Scarlets since moving there last summer.
And there is good news for his former Edinburgh and Scotland team-mate Cornell du Preez, who suffered horrific throat injury back in September, with the back-row being added to the Worcester Warriors squad.
Under EPCR tournament rules, clubs which have qualified for the knockout stages of the Heineken Champions Cup and the Challenge Cup can nominate up to three players for registration to supplement their European squads.
The registrations of players who were nominated by the deadline of midday today (Thursday, 14 March) are subject to confirmation by the relevant Unions and by EPCR.
