GLASGOW WARRIORS have issued a final update on players who will leave the club this summer, which provides confirmation that international hooker George Turner is indeed on his way out of Scotstoun. He is expected to join Japanese club  Kobelco Kobe Steelers on  a 12 month deal.

Props Oli Kebble, Enrique Pieretto and Lucio Sordoni, as well as second-row Sintu Manjezi and back-rower Thomas Gordon are also departing.

This group will join Fraser Brown – whose retirement from playing at the end of the season after over a decade with the club was announced last month – as well as Edinburgh recruits Ali Price and Ross Thompson in moving on to pastures new.

  1. The only real surprise for me is the Turner one. I love watching his charges at the defensive wall :). As I mentioned before Ross and several of the others just haven’t kicked on. If there is a budget cutting element, we cannot carry anyone who isn’t quite at it or spends a lot of time on the treatment table.

  2. Emphasis seems to be on giving more younger players the opportunity to put their hand up following the encouraging development this year of Williamson, Samuel, Ferrie, Mcbeth and Hiddleston. A few other new youngish props have been signed and a fit Murphy Walker should now get some playing time. Not sure what the word is on JP Du Preez – wish the Club would clarify the future on this as we need the big man to be active because Richie Gray won’t continue for ever. Plenty of cover at back row with what we have – I am a Tom Gordon fan but he wasn’t a regular starter and perhaps will deservedly get more game time at another Club.

  3. Not sad to see Kebble and Manjezi go and not so sure about the 2 Argentinian props. I always liked Gordon as a good cover flanker who never let you down. I’ve lost track of whose coming in but we seem to be losing more than were bringing in which is worrying and will weaken the squad. I hope there are a few decent incomers still to be announced.

  4. A good bunch of players leaving, some who have made a massive contribution to the team over the last few years. I’m particularly sad to see the departure of Kebble and Gordon, just because I love their attitude and always enjoyed watching them play. For me, Turner and Thompson are also big losses. Best wishes to all who are leaving and thanks for your efforts.

  5. I like George Turner and sorry to see him leave but Hiddleston seems to be an upgrade at the lineout

  6. Turner is a loss, plays with no care for himself, but has a corresponding propensity for head injuries. He may not have many seasons left so has earned the right to follow the cash to Japan. I wish him all the best.

Gordon is a strange one, always thought he was a very effective and abrasive player which we can lack…

  7. Sorry about Turner the rumour proved to be true. Never much of a fan of Manjezi not a great signing. Interesting about Gordon that’s a surprise. I wish they would give Afshar some game time I think he has great potential. I just hope we can get everyone back to full fitness and keep them there.

  8. Didn’t want to believe the rumours about Turner but here we are. He is miles above what we have at the moment and although Matthews is a try machine his darts can be hit or miss and the youngsters need a heck of a lot more time. Big sintu going is another strange one. Looks like big DuPreez is staying on but he definitely needs to get fit.

    • Sounds like the Turner contract is only 12 months so maybe he’ll be back? Sintu sadly never really kicked on at Glasgow, more surprised at Gordon, he’s decent

        • Yeah agreed, we need to get guys who are at the beginning of their career game time so they can push on for the national team.

          • Sorry to see Gordon leave. I love the way he plays – like an angry Saturday night with a chip on his shoulder. Can’t really remember him having a bad game. I hope he has a club lined up where he’ll get more game time and I hope he goes on the summer tour.

Turner is also a loss. Maybe not the best thrower, but we missed his physicality on the SA tour.

Hard to work out the plan at this stage – probably wiser to wait until recruitment has finished. But at this stage, it does feel like the focus is to rely more on youth and developing rough diamonds. Might tell a story about budgets.

        • We do however need a strong squad if we want to be a serious contender in the URC and Europe. The players you mention are already getting good game time.

      • They may replace Manjezi with Jare Oguntibeju from the Stirling super 6 team? There have been high hopes for him since he played for the U20s a couple of seasons ago and Glasgow have been giving quite a few younger players a chance this season with some success.
