HOOKER Johnny Matthews and tighthead prop Ewan McQuillin have both signed deals to stay on at Glasgow until the end of the current season. Both forwards had only been contracted until Christmas, but will now provide some much-needed front-row cover.
Twenty-seven-year-old Matthews joined the Warriors for the start of the 2019-20 campaign, having previously been with Boroughmuir. He was the top try-scorer in the Premiership while with the Meggetland club. Born in Liverpool, he is Scottish-qualified as his mother is from Glasgow.
McQuillin, 28, joined the Warriors around a year ago and made two appearances in the 2019-20 season. He previously played for the Southern Knights in Super6.
“This season has been like no other,” Glasgow coach Danny Wilson said. “We are likely to lose a lot of boys to international duty during the Six Nations again, and being able to have the likes of Johnny and Ewan available to us will be really beneficial.
“Johnny has been playing well for us recently and we’re delighted to secure his services until
the end of the season. Ewan stepped up for the Warriors last season coming in from the Southern Knights and playing against Dragons and Leinster just before the season was halted due to Covid. We were really impressed with his scrummaging ability and we’re looking for more of the same from him this time around.”

Matthews, a Scotland Club XV international, added: “I’m really happy to be able to get the chance to continue playing for this club. So far this season I’ve had opportunities to show what I can do. I feel like I’ve found my stride recently and I’m really looking forward to continue staking my claim for a spot in the match-day 23.”
McQuillin, who has also had spells with London Scottish and Yorkshire Carnegie, said he was “really excited to get this opportunity. To sign for Glasgow Warriors and to get the chance to build on my performances from last season is something I’m looking forward to. I’ve worked really hard to get to this position and I can’t wait to get back in amongst the squad and competing for the jersey.”
Multi month deal surely?
