GLASGOW WARRIORS back-row TJ Ioane has been handed a five-week suspension following his red carding for a dangerous tackle in Friday night’s European Challenge Cup round of 16 match against Montpellier at the GGL Stadium.
Ioane was sent off by the referee Karl Dickson of England in the 58th minute of the match for tackling the Montpellier replacement Yvan Reilhac in a dangerous manner in contravention of Law 9.13.
An independent Disciplinary Committee chaired by Jennifer Donovan (Ireland), and also comprising Martyn Wood (England) and Yannick Jauzion (France) upheld the red card decision, finding that Ioane had made contact with Reilhac’s head in a dangerous manner. It then determined that the offence was at the mid-range of World Rugby’s sanctions and selected six weeks as the appropriate entry point.

Taking into account the player’s guilty plea, the Committee reduced the sanction by one week before imposing a five-week suspension which will be served once Glasgow Warriors’ forthcoming fixtures in the Rainbow Cup are scheduled.
If Ioane is to miss the first five rounds of the Rainbow Cup, then the 31-year-old – who is on loan from London Irish until the end of the season – will only be able to play in the last round of pool matches and the tournament final, if Glasgow qualify.
Glasgow and Ioane do not plan to appeal the decision.

I honestly wonder if the sanction would have been as severe if he’d been french. Look at Paul Willemse’s 2 week ban for his eye gouge or the ‘nothing to see here’ findings from waffle Gate.
With all due respect, shouldn’t they just send him back to Brentford and be done with it? No point in keeping him around for the Rainbow Cup, give a young laddie a shot instead.
