FIVE years after he left Glasgow, Duncan Weir will complete his return this summer when he moves back from Worcester. The 29-year-old, who left Scotstoun for Edinburgh Rugby back in 2016 before moving on to the English Warriors two years later, will rejoin Danny Wilson’s squad on a “long-term deal”.
Wilson still plans to recruit a stand-off who can fill in immediately for the injured Adam Hastings and Pete Horne, but signing Weir is an important step towards rebuilding the squad for next season given Hastings is leaving for Gloucester.
“It’s massively exciting for me to be coming back to Glasgow Warriors,” Weir told the Glasgow website. “Glasgow is my home and Glasgow Warriors is my boyhood club where it all began. It’s always a massive honour pulling on the jersey and I’m really looking forward to doing it again.
“I’ve had some great chats with Danny. I’m excited to play a part in Glasgow’s future and helping drive the club on to winning more silverware and competing at the top end of the table which we are both hugely passionate about.

“For my family it’s going to be amazing just being so close to home, and the thought of my children growing up in Glasgow was hugely appealing to us when we were weighing up our options.
“I can’t wait to get back out in front of the crowds at Scotstoun. You can’t beat the atmosphere of a game under the Friday night lights.”
Weir made his Glasgow debut way back in 2010, and went on to play more than 100 times for the team in his first spell, the most memorable being his appearance off the bench in the 2015 PRO12 final. He won the first of his 30 Scotland caps to date in 2012 against France, and his most recent cap was against the same opposition last year.
Wilson said: “Duncan is an experienced, solid international 10 who will give us a strong game-management and goal-kicking platform. He’s Glasgow born and bred and someone who we believe will fit seamlessly back into our squad.
“Duncan knows exactly what it means to be a Warrior and is passionate about coming home. His experience will be a real asset to the squad next season – not only will he be a proven top-class operator available for selection, but he’ll be someone that our young backs can work with and learn from.”
Unfortunately shows the state of Scottish rugby, that the resigning of Duncan Weir, who was let go 5 years ago as either not being good enough or not fitting in with the Glasgow style, is hailed as a major signing. Similarly yesterday fantastic headlines were that Glasgow had managed to resign two players that aren’t yet close to being in the first team squad. No doubt tomorrow the headlines will be that Glasgow have managed to resign the club mascot on a 5 year deal!!! Is this really what we’ve been reduced to?

Weir was moved down the M8 against his will and that of the Glasgow coach at the time, one G Townsend who is on record as wanting to have kept Weir. Cockerill has admitted to releasing Weir when he was injured and not having really seen him play, and regretting it.
He isn’t a Russell (who is, anywhere?) or a Hastings but he is currently by some distance the next best Scottish 10. Far better than the poor man’s weir imitation at Edinburgh

Duncan is a really nice guy very steady as a player but not even close to Adam or Finn. Edinburgh are making good not great signings but better than current players – Bennett/Lang will be an interesting pairing. Glasgow are going backwards. Not sure when young Horne’s contract is up but they will be unlikely to hold onto him. Now imagine him at Edinburgh…that would complete a very interesting back line
