SCOTT Cummings has undergone surgery on a hand injury and will be out of action for up to two months. As well as missing a number of Glasgow games, the lock could now be ruled out of all of Scotland’s four autumn internationals.

Cummings, who played on to the end of the Warriors’ home win over the Sharks last week, is replaced by Lewis Bean for tomorrow’s match against the Lions. Glasgow’s team announcement made scant mention of Cummings’ injury, stating only:

“Lewis Bean makes his first start of the 2021/22 season as the Army man comes into the second row alongside Richie Gray, after Scott Cummings underwent surgery on a hand injury that will keep the Scotland international on the sidelines for six to eight weeks.”

The other alteration to the pack sees Rory Darge take over from Thomas Gordon in the back row, and there are also two changes to the back division for the URC round-three match, with Jamie Dobie starting at scrum-half and Nick Grigg taking over from Sione Tuipulotu at centre.

Loosehead prop Jamie Bhatti will be making his 50th appearance, while Matt Fagerson is set to be involved for the first time this season after completing his recovery from arm surgery.

“We’re looking forward to taking on another South African opposition tomorrow afternoon,” head coach Danny Wilson said. “Last week we played some really good rugby against the Sharks, finding a good balance between our kicking and running game. We scored some really good tries, but we took our foot off the pedal at around the 50th minute.

“This weekend against the Lions we’ll need to ensure we bring a complete performance and finish out the game strongly. We want to continue to build our strength in depth and tomorrow is another opportunity to do just that. We’re looking forward to seeing a different centre partnership in Nick [Grigg] and Sam [Johnson] run out this weekend and it’s great to welcome back Rory Darge and Matt Fagerson from injury.

“We’re up for the challenge the Lions will bring. They’re a big physical side and we’ll need to ensure our set piece is accurate.”
