George Horne named McCrea Financial Services Glasgow Warriors Player of the Season

Huw Jones, Kyle Steyn Sebastian Cancelliere, Stafford McDowall, Tom Jordan and Nathan McBeth among the other prize winners

GEORGE HORNE has been named the 2022-23 McCrea Financial Services Player of the Season, after coming out top of a fan’s poll. It is the third time the scrum-half has taken home the prize.

The scrum-half is currently the top Warriors scorer this season with 109 points from 16 appearances, with at least two knock-out game still to play against Scarlets away in the last four of the Challenge Cup this coming Saturday and Munster at home in the last eight of the URC the following weekend. His form this season has seen the 27-year-old usurp 2021 British and Irish Lion Ali Price in the No 9 pecking order at Glasgow.

Meanwhile, Argentinean winger Sebastian Cancelliere took home the Denholm Energy Services Players’ Player of the Season trophy from Sunday night’s awards night.

Tom Jordan was named as the Defender Breakthrough Player after making his competitive debut for the club against Benetton in round one of the URC and going on to become the first Glasgow back to feature in every match of the league campaign since Bernardo Stortoni in 2009-10.

Club captain Kyle Steyn was recognised with The Malcolm Group Leadership Award, having led from the front in his first season in the role.

Stafford McDowall was handed The Famous Grouse Coaches Award having turned round his career working under Franco Smith having feared that his pro career may have been over this time last year, and Nathan McBeth took home the Mackenzie Construction Most Improved Player of the Season prize.

Huw Jones collected the Harper Macleod Test Player of the Season prize, after being named in the 2023 Six Nations Team of the Tournament following a series of superb performances in the dark blue of Scotland, and he also produced the Try of the Season, presented by the University of Strathclyde, for his effort against the Dragons  in the round of 16 of the Challenge Cup at the start of this month.

 

Two of the region’s standout figures in community rugby were recognised with the SP Energy Networks Community Hero Award, in memory of Jim Taylor MBE, as Caroline Campbell of Montrose and Steven McCooey of Strathendrick shared the award. Both recipients have been instrumental in enhancing the rugby programmes of local schools and clubs, including in the 2023 SP Energy Networks Warriors Championship.
