EDINBURGH have addressed their shortages at lock by signing Andries Ferreira on a one-year deal. The 30-year-old South African, who had been linked with the capital club for some time, previously worked under head coach Richard Cockerill at Toulon.

“I’m really eager to get back playing again and make my mark in the Guinness PRO14,” Ferreira was quoted as saying on the Edinburgh website. “It’s a great competition with some brilliant players involved.

“I obviously know coach Cockerill from my time with Toulon. He really sold me on the club, its ambition and the way they want to play rugby. I can’t wait to get started and represent this great team and city.”

Ferreira spent the 2016-17 season with Toulon and also had a brief spell with Zebre. The bulk of his career, however, has been in South Africa, where he has played for the Cheetahs, the Lions and most recently the Bulls.

Cockerill had been keen to bolster his resources at second row for some time, knowing that Ben Toolis and Grant Gilchrist were likely to be absent on Scotland duty for much of this season. In the event, the latter has now been sidelined by injury and will miss the national team’s autumn Test series. With Lewis Carmichael and former club captain Fraser McKenzie also out injured, Andrew Davidson, Jamie Hodgson and Marshall Sykes will compete with the new signing for the two second-row berths.

  1. Sign for Super 6 and you disappear out of sight .
If none are deemed good enough what’s the point of Dodsons folly .

  2. Has Hunter-Hill’s move to Saracens become permanent? If not, and he’s on-loan, could he not be recalled? He has not looked out of place in the Saracens’ XV.

  3. Does he have to quarantine for 2 weeks if he’s coming from SA? Were any Super 6 guys considered for that period if so?
