NEWTON Stewart’s Mark McCornick was tonight named Men’s National League player of the season at the end of a campaign which saw him named player of the match in no fewer than 12 of his 19 appearances. The No 8 helped his club to a second-place finish in National 2 as they ended up on the same number of match points as Glasgow Accies but were pipped for promotion on points differential by a single point.

Poppy Fletcher of Heriot’s Blues was named Women’s National League player of the season. The 19-year-old front-row forward picked up five player-of-the-match awards at club level and also impressed with the Thistles in the Celtic Challenge.

The two winners were announced at Scottish Rugby’s Club Awards dinner at Murrayfield, which also saw Strathendrick, whose senior men’s team play in West Division 2, named Community Club of the Season. In addition to their men’s 15s and women’s 7s sides, Strathendrick now have 17 age-group teams.
