FREDDIE STEWARD had been dropped from the match-day squad by England head coach Steve Borthwick ahead of Saturday’s Calcutta Cup clash at Murrayfield, with George Furbank selected at full-back instead

It is only the second time Steward has been left out of England’s line-up for a competitive Test in his 33-match Test career since his debut in 2021 and suggests that Borthwick is more concerned about having a second playmaker on the field than the threat of  Scotland peppering the English backfield with an aerial bombardment.

Ollie Lawrence is selected in the centre after recovering from a hip injury and replaces Fraser Dingwall, who started England’s win over Wales last time out, while 37-year-old Danny Care will make his first Six Nations start in six years in place of the injured Alex Mitchell for what will be his 99th cap.

Dan Cole and Ellis Genge are named as the starting props after coming off the bench against Wales last time out.

England: G Furbank; T Freeman, H Slade, O Lawrence, E Daly; G Ford, D Care; E Genge, J George (capt), D Cole, M Itoje, O Chessum, E Roots, S Underhill, B Earl. Replacements: T Dan, J Marler, W Stuart, G Martin, C Cunningham-South, B Spencer, F Smith, I Feyi-Waboso.
