BRANDON THOMSON will officially join the Cheetahs from 1st March on a two-year deal.

The 25-year-old has been on the books with Glasgow Warriors since February 2017 but has struggled to climb above third in the stand-off pecking order, and a couple of costly missed kicks at goal this season appeared to kill off any chance he had of securing a renewal on his Scotstoun contract which was due to run out this summer.

It seems he has now taken an opportunity to leave the club early to return to his homeland, although it is not clear what competition the Cheetahs will compete in next season.

They were kicked out of the PRO14 last year in order to facilitate the addition of the Vodacom Bulls, Emirates Lions, Cell C Sharks and DHL Stormers when Covid restrictions allow.

The Cheetahs are expected to play against those former former Super Rugby franchises in the ‘Franchise Cup’, which is pencilled in to start on 27th February, although details of that competition are still being ironed out.

Vodacom Bulls, Emirates Lions, Cell C Sharks and DHL Stormers are then hoping to take part against the other PRO14 teams in the ‘Rainbow Cup’ from mid-April onwards, as a precursor to joining the PRO14 on a full-time basis next season, while it is not clear where the Cheetahs will turn at that point.
