- Job done! An object lesson in controlled dynamics from Melrose under the Myreside lights on Friday night. Back to full strength they simply blew Watsonians away in the first half – prompting Stuart Bathgate to observe that: ‘Playing like this there is not a team in the country who can touch them’ … Maybe?
- Give the Currie Chieftains young backs a platform and they will play. Ben Cairns was happy enough with his team’s fairly comfortable win over Hawick – but conscious, no doubt, that his substitutions had not gone particularly well.
- Ayr won ugly against Boroughmuir – commitment to the fore – three yellow cards – a welcome return for Stafford McDowall and Robbie Nairn – and Scott Lyle filling in for Frazier Climo convincingly.
- Heriots came good at Bridgehaugh. Vintage stuff – strong set-piece – dominant at the break-down – movement, pace and ambition–- solid defence. They will hope this is a benchmark for the second half of their season.
- You cannot play without the ball, as Stirling County discovered to their cost against Heriots – but in truth they have blown hot and cold all season.
- No complaints from Glasgow Hawks about their defeat at Marr. Well beaten by the better team on the day – and not a huge problem so long as they have learned from the experience.
- A reality check for Watsonians against Melrose. They failed the crucial physicality test, and as Stevie Lawrie well knows – rugby is a tough game when you are stuck on the back foot.
- More frustration and disappointment for Boroughmuir through at Millbrae. Survival is now the name of their game. No more excuses!
